In this scorecard, we graded 59 cities across the United States on the legality, taxation, and regulatory requirements surrounding short term rentals. While laws regulating vacation rentals are nothing new, the rapid rise of sharing economy companies like HomeAway and AirBnB has disrupted the lodging industry and spurred incumbent interests to seek out new regulatory mechanisms to protect their business models.
